Data Center Hosting business has become another significant and unique demand that are on its way of picking up.

You will find some of the top web hosting companies and data center hosting providers in Malaysia under this Blog. I hope this Blog can share with you what are the differences between these companies. Meanwhile, some basic understanding of what usually these companies are offering:

Web Hosting Company:

These companies usually offer total hosting solutions like Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting.

Shared Hosting includes domain registration service, web hosting, email hosting, reseller hosting, control panel hosting, MySQL hosting, Microsoft SQL 2000/2005 hosting, E-Commerce hosting, SMS hosting, and other application bundled hosting service such as CMS hosting service.

Dedicated Hosting such as server co-location hosting, dedicated server hosting are also offered by these companies.

These companies are usually hosting their server with data center provider by renting a rack space to put in their server with huge bandwidth in order to cater for the high volume traffic in and out of the hosting server. Some of the companies even hosting in-house, with a SDSL connection running 24 hours daily, without proper data center facilities support. These companies may consist of a proper sales and support team, or maybe 1 or 2 man-show business that doing the sale and support at the same time.

Data Center Malaysia:

These companines are data center provider. They built data center to support the growing demand of server hosting and in the meantime, they are also cross-selling other services like server administration and maintainance service, which called Managed Services. 

Service offered by Data Center Provider includes:

Server Co-Location Hosting

Customer like web hosting company will provide server to host with data center provider. Server rack space, bandwidth and IP address are provided to the customer. To formulate the charge, it is based on the following:

  1. The number of servers and how height the Rack Space. Rack space ranges from full rack, half rack, quarter rack, or rack space that based on rack server and tower server such as 1u, 2u, 4u, 6u. [1u = 1.75 inches height]

  2. Dedicated or Shared Bandwith

  3. Number of IP Address

  4. Other service such as firewall, backup, monitoring and so on.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Data Center will provide server, hosting, bandwidth and IP to its customer on monthly rental basis. This is usually tied up with certain months of contract for a customer to rent the server and hosting service all together.  You may define the server specification for them to formulate the charge. The major difference between dedicated server and server co-location hosting is you don’t have to pay upright to purchase the server, everything on monthly rental basis.

Managed Service

Managed Service is a cost effective way of outsourcing your daily IT operation job and let the expert to handle and manage your IT needs. The services that usually provided by the data center provider includes administration for the following services:

  1. Server and OS System (Windows, Linux, Unix, etc)

  2. Database (MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, etc)

  3. Network (VPN, Lease Line, etc)

  4. Security (Firewall, IDS/IPS, etc) 

  5. Backup (Tape management, Offsite Storage, NAS, SAN, etc)

  6. Monitoring (Server Port, Application, etc)

Besides, they can also provide consultancy on big scale or small scale implementation by understanding each customer’s specific requirement, for instance, implementing HQ and Branch office VPN, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery service, load balancing for server and application, and so on. Instead of hiring your own IT support for different area of IT needs, managed services provide the total outsourcing solution to its hosting customer that need somebody to take care of the daily IT job and process.
